Steenbok

Steenbok is a miniature antelope, prized by hunters for its gentleness, grace and the challenge of hunting one of Africa’s smallest ungulates. It is characterized by its small size (height at withers 45-60 cm, body weight 7-16 kg), reddish brown to fawn yellow coloration with white underbelly, large ears and short, straight horns found only in males reaching 7-19 centimeters in length. Hunting steenbok requires exceptional shooting precision, patience and the ability to locate these skittish animals in open savannas and overgrown areas, making the experience a fascinating challenge for hunters who specialize in small African species.

Where do you hunt for steenbok?

Steenbok is found in an extensive range covering eastern and southern areas of sub-Saharan Africa. The species inhabits Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, Malawi, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia, Angola and South Africa, preferring open savannas, grassy plains, dry scrub and transitional areas between bush and open spaces. South Africa offers the most accessible steenbok hunting opportunities in the Northern Cape, Eastern Cape, Free State, North West, Limpopo and Mpumalanga provinces, where the species is common in a variety of habitats. Namibia provides excellent hunting in spectacular landscapes from the Kalahari to the central plains and mountainous regions. Zimbabwe offers hunting in the Lowveld, Save Valley and other concessions areas. Tanzania allows steenbok hunting in most hunting areas, although the species is often not the main focus of safaris. Zambia offers hunting in the Luangwa and Kafue valleys. Botswana provides opportunities in natural habitats, although availability is limited. All of these destinations have in common the prevalence of steenbok, the diversity of landscapes and the opportunity to acquire a miniature but distinctive trophy as part of a comprehensive safari for small African antelope.

Hunting calendar

When to hunt for a steenbok?

The hunting season for steenbok in most countries lasts year-round where the species is available for hunting. In South Africa and Namibia, the optimal period is during the drier and cooler months of April through September, when visibility is better and the animals are more active in open areas. Early autumn and winter, especially from May to August, offer comfortable temperatures and lower vegetation making it easier to locate in overgrown areas and bush edges. In Tanzania and East Africa, the optimal period is the dry seasons from June to October and December to March. Steenbok are mainly active during the early mornings and late afternoons, resting in the shade of shrubs and tall grass during peak heat, often lying motionless in natural depressions in the area, making them difficult to spot.

When planning a steenbok hunt, it is crucial to understand its solitary, territorial lifestyle and specific defensive behavior. The steenbok usually lives alone or in pairs occupying small territories (usually 4-10 hectares), which are clearly marked by the male. Unlike most small antelopes, the steenbok has a unique behavior – instead of fleeing at the first threat, it often remains motionless lying in tall grass or behind bushes, hoping for camouflage, and only at the last moment bursts into a rapid run with zigzagging leaps. It prefers areas with a mix of open spaces and scattered vegetation, where it can feed on grasses, leaves and roots. Hunting is mainly done by the method of patient stalking with careful scanning of the terrain, listening for distinctive noises and using travel routes between feeding areas. Working with an experienced professional hunter (PH) and trackers is valuable for locating steenboks in their preferred habitats and identifying males by the presence of horns. The steenbok has excellent hearing and smell with relatively poorer eyesight, requiring the hunter to be absolutely quiet and use wind direction. Shooting a steenbok is extremely technically demanding due to the miniature size of the target – the vital zone is the size of a small melon, requiring absolute precision and stability. Shots are usually taken at distances of 50 to 120 meters, often at standing or slowly moving targets. Lightweight calibers (.223, .243, 6.5mm) are preferred, with premium ammunition controlling expansion to maintain the integrity of the miniature trophy. Precise placement of the shot into the vital zone behind the shoulder blade is crucial. The ethics of steenbok hunting are uncontroversial – the species has stable and numerous populations throughout its range, is not endangered and is managed as a game species. Hunting is focused on males recognizable by their horns. Steenbok horns are relatively small, but distinctive in their simple form and are a unique trophy in collections of small antelope. Full preparations perfectly capture the delicate structure and elegance of this small species. Steenbok meat is tender and tasty, although small in quantity. Hunting steenbok is often treated as a bonus species during larger safaris, adding a miniature trophy to the collection. Capturing a steenbok with horns exceeding 12-13 cm is an excellent achievement requiring shooting precision and hunting patience.
