Mouflon
The mouflon is a wild ancestor of the domestic sheep, prized by hunters for its distinctive spirally twisted horns, agility and exceptional adaptability to difficult mountain and hilly terrain. It is characterized by a compact, muscular body, a rusty brown coat with a distinctive light saddle in adult males, and impressive horns that reach full spiral coils. Hunting the mouflon presents a fascinating hunting challenge, requiring patience, knowledge of the terrain and the ability to shoot accurately at varying distances in the mountainous landscape.

Where do you hunt a mouflon?
The mouflon occurs naturally only on the Mediterranean islands of Corsica, Sardinia and Cyprus, where it is a relic of the original populations. Thanks to introductions and acclimatization success, however, the species has spread to most European countries, establishing stable hunting populations. The mouflon currently inhabits Poland, Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Croatia, Slovenia, France, Spain, Italy, Greece and Ukraine. Outside Europe, the mouflon has been introduced in the United States, Canada, Argentina, Chile, Australia and New Zealand. Poland offers excellent hunting opportunities for the mouflon, especially in the Sudeten Mountains, Swietokrzyskie Mountains and Roztocze, where the animals achieve high trophy quality. The Czech Republic and Slovakia are famous for their mouflon breeding traditions and offer hunts in scenic mountain fisheries with long-standing selection. Austria and Germany provide hunting in the Alps and lower mountain ranges with professional hunting infrastructure. Spain and France offer mouflon hunting in Mediterranean climates where the animals have adapted to drier conditions. Argentina and New Zealand have become popular destinations for hunters seeking exotic hunting experiences, where mouflons, in the absence of natural enemies, achieve spectacular size and horn quality. All of these regions offer a variety of hunting conditions – from gentle hills to steep mountain slopes – allowing the hunt to be tailored to the hunter’s preferences and condition.
When to hunt a mouflon?
The hunting season for the mouflon in Europe usually lasts from August to February, with the most desirable period falling during the autumn and early winter months of September to December. During this time, trophy rams are fully grown and reach maximum weight, and males are particularly active during the mating season, known as estrous, which occurs in November and December. During oestrus, rams demonstrate characteristic territorial behavior, fight spectacular battles for dominance and are easier to locate on open slopes and ridges. Early autumn, especially September and October, offers comfortable weather conditions and excellent visibility, making it easier to assess trophy quality. The later winter months require greater physical endurance, but offer the opportunity to hunt mature trophies in winter landscapes. In countries of the southern hemisphere, the season shifts accordingly, with the optimum period being from March to June.
When planning a mouflon hunt, it is crucial to choose the right times for the animals’ activity – early morning and late afternoon are the times when mouflons leave sheltered resting places and move to feeding grounds. Mountain hunting requires good physical fitness and knowledge of herd migration routes between different altitude levels. Experienced hunters prefer stealth or drive-by hunts, which allow them to approach animals at an appropriate distance in their natural habitat. Cooperation with a local leaseholder or hunting guide is invaluable in planning a hunt taking into account the economic plan, population structure and selective shooting rules. The mouflon is characterized by excellent eyesight and alertness, which requires the hunter to be patient, quiet and use the terrain for camouflage. Weather conditions, especially wind direction and precipitation, have a key impact on the animal’s activity and hunting effectiveness. Regardless of the method and timing chosen, mouflon hunting requires adherence to hunting ethics, precise shooting and respect for this beautiful species of mountain game.
