Where do you hunt red deer?

Red deer occur naturally in most European countries, including Poland, Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Serbia, Croatia, Slovenia, France, Spain, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Scotland, Norway, Sweden and the Baltic States. Outside Europe, populations of red deer populate Turkey, Morocco, Algeria, Iran, Afghanistan and vast areas of Central Asia. Through introductions, the species has successfully acclimatized in Argentina, Chile, New Zealand, Australia and the United States. Each of these regions offers unique hunting conditions – from the mountain pastures of the Carpathian Mountains and the Alps, through the vast lowland forests of Central Europe, to the open spaces of the Argentine pampas. Poland ranks among the top European countries in terms of trophy quality, especially in the Bory Dolnoslaskie, Puszcza Notecka and Warmia and Masuria. Austria and Hungary are famous for their tradition of hunting mighty bulls in scenic mountainous areas. Scotland offers hunting in the wild Highlands, where deer are characterized by smaller size but exceptional resilience. New Zealand and Argentina provide spectacular trophy hunts in the exciting landscapes of the Southern Hemisphere, often with opportunities to combine with other game species. All of these destinations have in common a rich hunting tradition, professional population management and the opportunity for top medal-grade trophies.

Hunting calendar

When to hunt red deer?

The hunting season for red deer in Europe usually lasts from August to January, with the most desirable period being the roaring season that falls in September and October. During this time, mature bulls are most active, aggressive and easier to locate thanks to the distinctive roar that reverberates through the forest during the evening and morning hours. The antlers then reach full development and ossification, making them particularly attractive trophies. Hunting during the roaring season requires excellent physical condition, patience, and decoying skills to approach the bull at a reasonable distance. In countries of the southern hemisphere, the season shifts accordingly by half a year, with the roaring season falling in the months of March through May.

When planning to hunt red deer, it is important to take into account local regulations, which precisely define the protection and shooting periods of each age class. Winter hunting, from November to January, offers other challenges – the animals are more skittish, congregate in larger groups and stay in specific wintering areas, which requires different hunting tactics. Experienced hunters prefer the hours of dawn and dusk, when deer move between foraging and bedding areas. Cooperation with experienced hunters and pikemen is crucial to the success of the hunt, especially in difficult mountainous terrain or vast forest complexes. Regardless of the chosen date, hunting red deer requires comprehensive preparation, knowledge of the biology of the species, and respect for hunting ethics and selective shooting.
