Pheasants

The pheasant is one of the most distinctive and prized species of game birds, introduced to Europe from Asia and perfectly acclimatized to local conditions. Pheasant roosters are distinguished by their spectacular multicolored plumage with metallic reflections, long tail and distinctive voice, while hens present a more modest, protective coloration. Pheasant hunting requires excellent cooperation with hunting dogs, the ability to shoot the soaring bird quickly, and knowledge of the species’ preferred habitat, making pheasant hunting a classic and highly rewarding form of fawn hunting.

Where do you hunt pheasants?

Naturally native to Asia, the pheasant has been introduced and successfully acclimated to most countries in the temperate zone of both hemispheres. In Europe, the species is found in virtually all countries, including Poland, Germany, Great Britain, Ireland, France, Spain, Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Austria, Switzerland, the Scandinavian countries, and Ukraine and western Russia. Naturally, the pheasant is found in China, Mongolia, the Caucasus, Central Asia and the Far East. Outside Europe, the species has been introduced in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Argentina, Chile, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. Poland offers excellent hunting opportunities for pheasants, especially in the Wielkopolska Plain, Silesia, Kujawy and the western provinces, where intensive breeding and herding of the species is carried out. Great Britain is famous for its traditional, elegant pheasant hunts with huge numbers of birds and hunting ceremonies. Germany, France and Austria offer hunts in richly stocked fisheries with professional organization and excellent dogs. The United States, especially South Dakota, Iowa and Kansas, are considered meccas for pheasant hunting with huge wild populations and spectacular hunts in the corn prairies. Argentina offers commercial hunting with the opportunity to harvest hundreds of birds per season, often combined with dove and duck hunting.

Hunting calendar

When to hunt pheasants?

The pheasant hunting season in Europe typically runs from October to the end of January, with the busiest period being the fall months of October through December. Early autumn offers hunting for the young birds of the year, which are less experienced and easier for dogs to approach, making this period ideal for the training of young greyhounds and colts. Late autumn, especially November and December, is the time to hunt mature roosters with fully developed plumage, which are the most difficult and prestigious targets. December and January offer classic winter hunting, when pheasants concentrate in specific habitats and form larger groups, making it easier to organize group hunts. In the United States, the season varies from state to state, but generally runs from October to the end of February. In the southern hemisphere, in Argentina and Chile, the season falls in the months of April through July, respectively.

When planning to hunt pheasants, it is crucial to choose the right time of day and weather conditions – the early morning hours after the dew and late afternoon are the time of greatest bird activity. Pheasants prefer foraging in cultivated fields, especially corn, grain and rapeseed fields, as well as in meadows and near mid-field shelter trees, where they find shelter. Classical hunting is carried out with fetching dogs – colts, seeters or spaniels – which search the area, locate the birds and scare them into flight. Cooperation with experienced dogs is absolutely crucial to the success of the hunt, as pheasants run very well in dense vegetation and are reluctant to take flight. Collective hunts, organized especially in Western Europe, require precise coordination, knowledge of safety rules and the ability to shoot in the presence of other hunters. Weather conditions – light winds, cloudy weather without heavy rainfall – favor bird activity and hunting efficiency. Experienced hunters pay special attention to selective shooting, preferring roosters and protecting hens to preserve the reproductive potential of the population. Regardless of the method and location, pheasant hunting requires adherence to shooting limits, shooting safety rules and hunting ethics, including attention to searching for all birds shot down and minimizing losses.
