Ducks
Ducks are one of the most popular and diverse groups of game birds, valued by hunters for their hunting dynamics, flight skills and culinary qualities. Among the game species are mallard, gyre, loggerhead, marmot, pintail, tufted duck, redshank, ogre, uhla and platypus. Duck hunting requires an excellent knowledge of the biology of the species, the ability to shoot quickly at a moving target and the ability to read the behavior of birds in different weather conditions, making waterfowl hunting one of the most exciting and challenging forms of hunting.

Where do you hunt ducks?
Ducks are found on all continents except Antarctica, inhabiting a variety of aquatic environments from the Arctic tundra to tropical wetlands. In Europe, the game species are found in all countries, including Poland, Germany, France, Spain, the United Kingdom, Ireland, the Netherlands, Belgium, the Scandinavian countries, the Baltics, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Italy, Greece, and Ukraine and Russia. Ducks also inhabit all of Asia from Turkey and the Middle East, to Kazakhstan, China, Japan and Southeast Asia. In the Americas, ducks are found from Alaska and Canada through the United States, Mexico, Central America to Argentina and Chile. The species is also found in Australia, New Zealand and Africa. Poland offers excellent duck hunting opportunities in Masuria, the Pomeranian Lake District, the Biebrza, Narew and Oder valleys, as well as on fishponds and lagoons. Hungary is famous for traditional hunting on the Danube floodplains and Lake Balaton. France offers spectacular hunting in the Rhone delta and Atlantic wetlands. Scandinavia provides hunting in the harsh conditions of northern lakes and fjords. The United States, especially the Central Flyway states and Louisiana and Arkansas, are considered duck hunting meccas with the richest populations. Argentina offers unparalleled hunting for huge numbers of ducks in the Entre Ríos region and Buenos Aires province, where commercial hunting with hundreds of birds a day is possible.
When to hunt ducks?
The duck hunting season in Europe usually lasts from September to the end of January, with the busiest period being the autumn months of October through December, when local populations are overlapped by birds migrating from the north. Early autumn offers hunting for local ducks, which still know the area well and are less skittish. Late autumn and early winter is the time of mass migrations, when huge flocks of Arctic ducks appear in Polish and European waters, providing the most dynamic and effective hunting. December and January, despite more difficult weather conditions, offer hunting for large concentrations of birds on unfrozen bodies of water. In the United States, the season varies from state to state, but generally runs from October to the end of January. In the southern hemisphere, in Argentina and Chile, the season is from May to August, offering year-round duck hunting opportunities for die-hard enthusiasts.
When planning a duck hunt, the most important thing is to identify the birds’ flight routes, roosting and feeding areas, which change depending on weather conditions and time of day. Classic morning hunts begin before dawn, when ducks leave their roosting sites and move to feeding grounds – ponds, farm fields and shallow floodplains. Evening hunts take place in the hours before dark, when the birds return to roost. Experienced hunters use decoys – both plastic dummies and voice decoys – and build lookouts and hiding places in rushes and riparian vegetation. Weather conditions have a key impact on the effectiveness of the hunt – days that are cloudy, windy and with light rainfall are most favorable, as ducks fly lower and are less wary. Cooperation with fetching dogs, especially retrievers, is invaluable for finding downed birds in hard-to-reach wetlands. Knowing how to identify species in flight is absolutely crucial to adhering to hunting regulations and protecting protected species. Regardless of the method and location chosen, duck hunting requires adherence to shooting limits, safety rules and hunting ethics, including the prohibition of shooting at sitting birds and attention to minimally
